Compost Hub at Bluebird Center is open!
25 Bluebird Drive
See full compost delivery schedule here
In 2025, the compost hub provided 334 cubic yards of finished compost to the community
This FREE compost is USDA certified organic, produced from local facilities processing material collected from approved residential green carts around Sonoma County, including from Windsor. This hub replaces Windsor's annual compost giveaway.
Compost does not contain biosolids (wastewater) or manure
Alternate compost resource: 750 Heron Drive, Healdsburg (Badger Park)
Instructions:
Bring your own shovel, gloves, and container to fill.
Please limit your load to two 5-gallon buckets per visit per day; leave some for others!
Please be respectful of the site and others by cleaning up after yourself.
Please close the hub doors when leaving.
Have fun!
A few reminders:
- This compost is for residential use only. Please refrain from commercial use as this is a shared public resource
- The allowed amount per household per day is two 5-gallon buckets of compost. We require this to allow all residents to have equitable access to organic compost year-round
- This compost hub is funded by Zero Waste Sonoma (ZWS) grant funds. Project background:
In July 2024, the Town of Windsor was awarded partial grant funding to selectively remove vegetation in five creek sections on the east side of town. The grant is under FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and is facilitated by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES). The first round of vegetation removal was completed in 2025.
Since the FEMA grant did not cover hand removal, the Town of Windsor and the California Native Plant Society are coordinating volunteer work to help address additional ladder fuels found along Windsor Creek to complement prior efforts. This volunteer project is NOT funded by the Town’s FEMA grant-funded Wildfire Fuel Reduction Project.
Volunteers will hand-remove known fire-fuels (“ladder fuels”) like French and Scotch Broom, Arundo Donax, and Ivy from the upper banks of Windsor Creek, along with trash. The area will be replanted or reseeded with fire-resilient, water-wise native plants that will help prevent bank erosion and improve soil quality. Anticipated future workdays are in May and September.

The Town is developing methods to lower waste generation at Town-sponsored events, with a goal of achieving Zero Waste by 2030. These efforts include educating the community on proper waste sorting, avoiding polystyrene and other non-recyclable single-use plastics, favoring renewable materials, reusing supplies, sharing resources, and opting to repair before replacing.
Town events focused on lowering waste:
- Waste Less Windsor at Summer Nights on the Green Concert Series
- Green Halloween Party 2025 | 2024
- Earth Day Celebrations
- Reserve your spot for E-waste and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection events through Zero Waste Sonoma
Upcoming Windsor events:
HHW collection 3-8pm on September 22 and December 8, 2026 (Public Works)
E-Waste collection 9am-5pm October 2-4, 2026 (Town Hall)

Do you see any Town of Windsor vehicles around that have nothing coming out of the tailpipe?
That is because Town staff is working hard to replace traditional Internal Combustion Engine fleet vehicles with electric equivalents when possible. This transition lowers greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which not only helps curb climate change but contributes to cleaner local air.
The Town is required to purchase electric vehicles in order to comply with the California Air Resources Board's Advanced Clean Fleet Requirements for EV procurement.

Windsor's Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Check out the Regional Climate Protection Authority's greenhouse gas (GHG) dashboard to see Windsor's community emissions breakdown here.
"Community GHG emissions" means all that the community (Town municipal operations, residents, businesses, etc) emits through transportation, buildings and street facilities, water use, solid waste (trash, recycle, compost), and more.
Did you know?
Transportation makes up 64% of all of Windsor's community GHG emissions! This is all of our personal vehicles, construction vehicles, Town of Windsor's municipal fleet, and any other gas-powered vehicles on or off the road.
