About the Downtown Windsor Photo Gallery

The SMART Windsor Station public art project has been a longstanding priority for the Town of Windsor’s Public Art Advisory Commission. First identified in 2016, the goal of this initiative was to create an art installation that would welcome every train rider into Windsor, embracing the Commission’s vision of Windsor as a destination for creativity, education, and cultural connection. While delays in the SMART station development postponed the project timeline, the commitment to enhancing the public space through art remained strong.

In 2022, the Commission partnered with Creative Sonoma’s ArtSurround initiative—a collaborative effort to energize Sonoma County’s public spaces through creative placemaking. Local artist Ann Weber was selected to lead the project, curating a temporary installation titled Art Under the Oaks: Downtown Photo Gallery. The project was launched with a community-wide photo contest across eight themes: Parks, Nature, Events, Learning, People, Arts, Culture, and Food. Winning photographs, juried by the Commission, were displayed in a vibrant outdoor exhibit displayed along Old Redwood Highway, across from the Civic Center. In 2024, the project expanded to Windsor Road, on fencing just south of the Public Works building entrance and the Windsor High School.

With the opening of the SMART Windsor Station in 2025, the Town is thrilled to finally welcome train riders with a public art installation that celebrates Windsor's unique identity, community pride, and creative spirit. The newly installed artworks along the station platform and the nearby SMART Pathway/Great Redwood Trail celebrate Windsor’s unique identity, community pride, and creative spirit. These installations not only enhance the travel experience but also serve as lasting symbols of Windsor’s dedication to cultural expression, public engagement, and transforming everyday spaces into vibrant, inspiring environments.
