Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART)

The SMART Windsor station is open for passenger service!

Located just steps from the Windsor Town Green, the new station enhances access to one of Sonoma County’s most beloved community gathering places, making it easier than ever to enjoy Windsor’s shops, restaurants, and events by train. This latest addition to the SMART rail and pathway network strengthens local and regional connections while advancing sustainable transportation. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with the Windsor community and marking a significant step forward for Sonoma and Marin counties.

On Monday, August 4, 2025, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved the Town of Windsor's Quiet Zone for the SMART train.

Effective Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the southbound trips that were temporarily suspended will resume:

  • Trip 1 - departing at 4:35 AM
  • Trip 3 - departing at 4:58 AM
  • Trip 5 - departing at 5:30 AM

With the Windsor Quiet Zone now approved, routine use of the train horn at designated crossings in Windsor will be discontinued starting Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

SMART engineers will continue to sound the train horn in emergency or safety-critical situations—such as when people, vehicles, or construction crews are on or near the tracks—or when required by SMART’s operating rules.

SMART is a popular mode of transportation for commuters, students, and leisure travelers, and 15% of riders bring bicycles onboard the train. Passenger rail service is a vital part of the North Bay’s economy, and expanding the SMART railway northward will bring economic opportunities by strengthening our housing, business, and community infrastructure and creating hundreds of construction jobs.
